This blog will be written in two parts. There is no way I can capture all of the HTHSCV student projects and activities going on (which are all thoughtful and thought-provoking!), so I decided to provide a few project summaries as examples of the creative and innovative work being done.

A flurry of activity the past couple of weeks at HTHSCV in preparation for the upcoming “Festival del Sol” on March 22nd! The Festival is school-wide exhibition of student projects and activities presented in a variety of formats, activities, and project designs. Many “exhibitions” are organized in the following manner: proposals and prototypes; architectural models and renderings; multi-media artwork, murals and drawings; photographic essays and posters; printmaking and story books; skits and “comedy sketches”; community collaborations and partnerships; and scientific research study (natural, physical, and marine sciences).

Student projects and activities are organized under the “umbrella” of design thinking and an interdisciplinary curricular model of teaching and learning. Themes include, but are not limited to, social justice, human/civil rights, climate change/environmental education, community development and entrepreneurship, economic and political issues and challenges, social activism, and leadership in the 21st century. Numerous projects and “productions” are part of extensive collaborations and partnerships with local area schools, businesses and non-profit organizations. These efforts are designed in some cases as “one-on-one” relationships between HTHSCV students and various “customers or clients.”

Summary:

The community building project is a joint enterprise that is part of a urban re-development project on El Cajon and 43rd Ave in East San Diego. The project includes several changes to a “lot” where local community members bring various business enterprises. The new “footprint” will feature new fencing for entry/areas, new places to sit, and offer an opportunity for future community business expansion known as the Incubator Business Concept. The San Diego International Airport design is a student presentation that involves architectural renderings and concept models for a new terminal. These will be on display at the airport for public viewing and comment.
