Today the nation’s young people staged a “nationwide walkout” in remembrance of the 17 students and teachers who lost their lives at Parkland High School in Florida. These events were held on hundreds of school campuses across the U.S. providing students an opportunity “raise their collective voices” in a massive expression of solidarity and activism related to gun and school violence.

HTHSCV also participated in the “walkout” --- organized by the campus PEACE Club. Student speakers shared their thoughts related to putting an end to school violence, read the names of the 17 victims, and provided fellow students the opportunity to make posters and signs expressing personal messages and sentiments. Students were then asked to walk around the school perimeter in silence reflecting on the day and its meaning.

All of this occurred in a spirit of love, dignity, and caring as many students hugged and supported each other throughout the event. Several faculty and staff, including myself, also participated in the walk – expressing our own unconditional support for student voices and activism. Finally, it was beautiful to see an event that started on a cloudy, overcast morning end with the sun breaking through the clouds as students returned to classes – something that makes one's heart sing!
