I often feel the necessity to seek out people and events that are engaging and noteworthy in a variety of contexts and conversations. This past week presented an event that was informative, engaging and captured the spirit of celebration and collaboration.

I recently met Steve Chapple, founder of Intellectual Capital, La Jolla CA. Steve is a writer, author, scientist, and consultant in the fields of technology and entrepreneurship. His work is a series of creative initiatives and innovative collaborations and partnerships bringing together schools, colleges and universities, start-up companies, major corporations, and non-profit organizations. Of particular interest is Steve’s work that focuses on career opportunities with STEAM fields and connects business leaders to San Diego students. His creation of the “STEAM Leadership Series” provides a series of interactive conversations and events with current and “young scientists and researchers” from a wide variety of scientific interests and disciplines.

An upcoming event in the “STEAM Leadership Series” will provide 300 teenage women from San Diego Unified high schools an opportunity to attend a day-long conference at the Salk Institute entitled “Women in Biotech.” The conference will be keynoted by Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn - Nobel Prize recipient and President of the Salk Institute. As stated in the conference description, “this is an event that empowers young women to pursue careers and opportunities in science, technology while highlighting the contributions and work of women scientists from throughout the global community.” “Community Partners” in the STEAM Leadership Series and this specific event include: The Salk Institute; San Diego Unified School District; Moxie Foundation; The Janssen Foundation; SDGE; The San Diego Foundation; Sempra Energy, The Farrell Foundation; Illumina; and the USS Midway Museum.

Steve and his team were recognized this past week at the San Diego City Council meeting and presented a Proclamation designating March 6, 2018 “STEAM Leadership Series Day.” This proclamation was for outstanding contributions and leadership in providing students and the community opportunities to participate in creative and innovative STEAM programs, activities and projects. Well done and cheers!
