The 2018 San Diego Science and Engineering Festival commenced yesterday. This is a week-long series of activities from March 3-11, highlighting STEM projects, activities and events across the greater San Diego community.
The “kick-off” event occurred yesterday at the 10th Annual Science and Engineering Expo at PetCo Park in downtown San Diego. Over 130 local businesses, corporations, organizations and schools provided interactive, hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts and math exhibits and activities for K-12 science lovers. It was estimated that over 25,000 people attended the EXPO!
HTHSCV was invited to participate in the 2018 Expo with a display related their work and research in the Ichthyology and Herpetology course. The HTHSCV booth focused on ways that connected with “HTHSCV core day curriculum” that engages students in learning about identification, behavior, and maintenance of fish species as well as reptiles and amphibians. Students shared information about opportunities in participating in feedings, hands-on lab maintenance and set-up tanks, handling and care of live animals, and explained the process of receiving training necessary can earn a pet shop certification. Students also explained about opportunities in networking with other scientists and researchers, and members of the pet industry.
An impressive array of topics was discussed during discussions with “Expo participants.” These included: animals; biology; chemistry; ecology; education; engineering environment, marine life, oceanography; and zoology. As a celebration of their EXPO presentation and hard work, the “HTHSCV Ichthyology and Herpetology Team” received a “Runner-Up Award” from the “Bright Idea Society” for their efforts in the area of Marine Life research --- an impressive award for innovative and creative field research in and out of the classroom!
